The project involved the demolition of two external stores and the construction of a stand alone extension, with all associated accommodation, landscaping, signage and site works, at Davis College, Summerhill, Carrowkeal, Mallow, Co. Cork. The stand-alone extension was approximately 5,000m2 , part-single storey and part- three storey in height, accommodating classrooms, laboratories, social areas, administration rooms and a special education needs unit. The site works included ballcourts, outdoor play areas, landscaping and a covered walkway to the existing school. The works included alterations to the existing school building to facilitate access to the extension.

MMD Construction was the main Contractor and the Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS) for the works at Davis College. As the PSCS, MMD Construction had the responsibility of managing and co-ordinating all health and safety matters during the construction of the school which was located within a busy suburban area. The works were bounded by residential developments to the north, west, south and east; and by a primary school to the north-west. Both the adjacent primary school Gaelscoil Thomás Dáibhis, and Davis College itself, was occupied and in full use for the duration of the construction works, apart from during school holiday periods. The existing residences were also occupied. The site access was through Sexton’s Boreen. Both schools, residents and others used Sexton’s Boreen for the duration of the works. The MMD Construction Site Management Team liaised very closely with the Schools Management Team and on-site Clerk of Works to ensure that the works would not interfere with any of the school’s activities.

All works were completed in accordance with the contract documents and complied with all statutory requirements including the Building Control Regulations and the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations.
